Representing Decimals

Decimals are part of a whole.  For example 0.40 cents is part of $1.00, 10 cm is part of 1 metre and 30 seconds is part of 1 minute. 


We can represent decimals in several different ways:

Expanded form:


.231= 0.2 + 0.03 + 0.001
.231= 2 tenths + 3 hundredths + 1 thousandths
